Microsoft has announced prices for Azure, it’s cloud hosting offering.

Users will be charged $0.12 per hour for computation, and $0.15 per GB for storage.  There will also be charges for SQL Azure and .NET services.

These prices make it competitive with the likes of Amazon’s EC2 and S3 offerings, and also with Rackspace’s cloud-servers and cloud-files offerings.  What’s more, both Amazon and Rackspace have had big problems hosting windows and .NET-based applications, so if Microsoft can get this right it seems likely that they’ll become the place of choice to host windows-based applications.  Whether they can also provide a compelling reason to switch Linux-based apps remains to be seen.
